america’s most shameful story — the shooting of stephon clark

Image
Commentators said the shooting was anational disgrace, but one with which the world is now all too familiar. Picture: AFP Photo/Sacramento Police Department / Andrew Caballero-ReynoldsSource:AFPI'M walking through New York's Times Square in the evening and notice that the steps usually packed with tourists snapping selfies of the famous neon lights are deserted. At the foot of the stairs, illuminated by signs advertising Google and Jesus Christ Superstar, a group of protesters wearing "F*** the police" shirts are shouting at weary-looking officers. Over in Chicago, demonstrators gathered at the Trump International Hotel yesterday waved placards and screamed in anger. And at the nexus of this fury in Sacramento, California, 200 demonstrators in black masks faced down riot police on Saturday, in one of a string of protests over the appalling incident that took place battery in the city a fortnight ago.But the White House has called their grief a "local issue",...

It's Shocking How Little Is Done When Native Women Disappear

Image
From Marie ClaireIn June 2017, sisters Ashley and Kimberly Heavy Runner Loring were full of plans. Ashley hoped to leave her home on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation, east of Glacier National Park in Montana, later that summer for Missoula, where she would live with Kimberly while studying environmental science at the University of Montana. electric But while Kimberly was away for a few months getting to know her fiancé's family in Morocco, Ashley grew despondent. The then-20-year-old was devastated following a breakup and often texted her sister for advice. "It was like her world was ending," says Kimberly, now 25. Ashley cried more often and kept to herself. She stopped attending her classes at Blackfeet Community College and befriended a decades-older crowd, which included some who were rumored to sell and use drugs like meth. In early June, she called Kimberly, saying she needed money. Kimberly couldn't send it from Morocco but promised she would be home in jus...

save the environment and your health by reducing plastic consumption

a primer about solar electric: it can get a little complicated, so here are some technical points to help you get started.

Image
Back when I was a young teenager, I saw something that changed my life forever--a solar electric panel. My parents had just bought remote, mountain property here in Colorado. Our family has always loved the outdoors, with fishing, hiking, backpacking and camping our favorite activities, and of course it's essential to have somewhere to escape the big city as often as possible. My folks were planning to build a rustic cabin, with kerosene lamps for light , a woodstove for heat, a gasoline generator for power tools and where "running water" meant my dad had to pick up the pace a bit carrying buckets up from the spring. The nearest power lines were (and still are) 11 miles away. After our camper was parked on the property and cabin plans were forming, we started going out to meet and greet our neighbors (always a good plan in the country). At dinner at our neighbor's house, we were all stunned that they had electric lights and a small stereo for music and radio! All ...

The Internet and the End of \'Things\' | HuffPost

Image
The "Internet of Things" is everyone's new favorite buzzword. This increasing interconnectedness (is that a word?) will lead to the end of various "things" that at one time were commonplace. In the next twenty years we will see the virtual disappearance of many everyday physical items, including books (more ebooks will be sold in the US next year than paper books), paper currency and most single-use consumer electronic (does anyone even need an alarm clock anymore?). Like the remote control (yes, there is an app for that) and business cards (how are these still a thing?), there are many physical items in our lives that will disappear in the year to come. The three soon-to-be obsolete things that I want to focus on are the key, glass the mail, and physical crime. The Key: I am an angel investor in KeyMe, a startup that makes digital copies of your keys to help avoid lockout charges. I did this even though I believe the decline of the antiquated pieces of me...

Ready, set, paint!

Want to give your kitchen a facelift without draining your wallet Consider painting the cabinets.Wood cabinet refinishing entails removing the existing paint, sanding the surface (depending on the type of paint you are using) and applying new paint to the bare wood. This cosmetic project revives cabinets that have become scratched, faded or discolored, and breathes new life into an old kitchen. "Refinishing cabinets is a fantastic, cost-effective way to transform the look and feel of a kitchen," says Dan DiClerico, home expert at HomeAdvisor, a remodeling project resource. It's also a fraction of the cost of doing a full kitchen remodel, inflatable which runs, on average, $22,632, according to HomeAdvisor. Even replacing old kitchen cabinets with new cabinets starts at about $4,000 for a typical 10-by-12-foot kitchen, according to HouseLogic, an online resource for homeowners. HomeAdvisor says the average cost to repaint kitchen cabinets is about $1,000 – if you hire a p...

Why I get mistaken for being drunk

Sex and relationships for disabled people can give rise to unspoken questions and sensitivities - often among the able bodied. But amid the awkwardness there is humour. The following is an edited version of a monologue by Ruby MacKellar, who has dyspraxia. Everybody had already taken all the good disabilities, so I got left with dyspraxia. Somebody had to have it.It's a developmental, co-ordination disorder - the less sexy cousin of dyslexia. It largely affects motor control and speech, and memory and information processing, so what generally happens is I fall over a lot and I cock everything up. Little things are difficult for me, like clothes, hair and make-up, so I like wearing large, elasticated clothes that don't show barrel I've dropped my dinner down them. I've no excuse for my hair, obviously.I love living alone because of people. And so my favourite activity is sitting alone on the sofa in my pants, watching telly. I can't actually keep pets or houseplant...
